Students at the week-long Rice Biotech Summer Camp engaged in a wide array of hands-on activities and gained valuable insights into the world of biotechnology.
Students acquired practical experience in the lab, learning how to make gels and run gel electrophoresis, essential for separating and analyzing DNA and proteins. Students also had the unique opportunity to visit Dr. J’s lab at Rice University. This visit exposed them to cutting-edge research, where they learned about rheology (the study of the flow of matter) and learned how to analyze substances using an electron microscope. Students also got to speak with a Biotech entrepreneur and created bioengineered algae.
To round out their experience, Students learned about college application strategies from a student at Yale, providing the campers with guidance for applying to scholarships and writing personal statements. Throughout the week, students were immersed in and learned the major concepts related to the field of biotechnology.
